image-6558

Summer is just around the corner and the sun is coming out – always a welcome sight in Vancouver! As we gear up to enjoy some quality time in the great outdoors, finding the perfect sunscreen is sure to become a priority, as sunscreen provides a strong line of defense against the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation. Find out why sunscreen is the single most important skincare product you could own, and discover the perfect natural sunscreen for you as you read on!

When should you wear sunscreen?

Technically, you should wear sunscreen every day, not just in summer or on sunny days. Even if the sun happens to be hiding behind the clouds, it is still emitting light, along with UV radiation, which is known to induce oxidative stress in our bodies and contribute to skin cancer. As well, exposure to UV radiation contributes to the signs of extrinsic aging by 80% via collagen breakdown. If you haven’t gotten into the habit of applying sunscreen daily already, though, there is no better time to start than the summer when the UV index is highest. Sunscreen is vital for preventing sunburns, sunspots, and premature aging of the skin – you do not want to be without it when the sun is beating down!

Why choose natural sunscreens?

There are two types of sunscreen on the market: natural sunscreens, also known as mineral/physical sunscreens, and chemical sunscreens. While both are equally effective when it comes to protecting your skin from UV radiation, the latter is, unfortunately, associated with a number of risks that can negatively impact people’s health and the environment, too. Chemical sunscreens use a combination of synthetic filters to absorb UV rays; many of these filters, such as oxybenzone and avobenzone, cause allergic reactions in people, with symptoms of red skin, rashes, and blisters. Because these filters absorb heat, people with sensitive skin can experience skin flushing and exacerbation of preexisting skin conditions such as rosacea. Physical sunscreens use the mineral filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to reflect the rays of the sun so that they do not reach and penetrate the skin; thus, they are suitable for even the most sensitive and delicate skin.

Furthermore, research has revealed that certain chemical sunscreen filters are toxic to coral and other marine life, oxybenzone and octinoxate being the most notable examples. These chemicals can reach the ocean via wastewater, so even if people do not swim in the ocean with chemical sunscreen applied, they can still contribute to damaging marine ecosystems when they wash off chemical sunscreen at home or at the pool. Hawaii has even moved to ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate starting 2021! On the other hand, non-nano titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are not known to have negative effects on coral and other marine life, so they are a safe option for your aquatic adventures. It is also important to note that some natural sunscreens contain antibacterial substances such as lavender essential oil, which can have a negative effect on marine microorganisms; remember to choose natural sunscreens with minimal essential oils in the formula.
