Functional Medical Testing at the Finlandia Health Centre

Featured Test: PULS Test by Lifelabs (Protein Unstable Lesion Signature) – Assessing cardiovascular injury and risk of future cardiac events at the Finlandia Health Centre

Welcome to Functional Medicine Testing with Dr. David Duizer, ND. I am a Naturopathic Doctor practicing chronic disease management and integrative cancer care at the Finlandia Health Centre. My clinical focus is the holistic approach to optimal wellness – the supporting of all organ systems to bring the body back to balance. Functional medicine testing and treatment is an important part of my practice.

In this section, we will be sharing cutting edge testing services we offer through our Naturopathic Doctors at Finlandia.

In recent years, functional medicine testing has come a long way. Labs are frequently developing new tests and, in turn, patients are getting more information about their health than ever before. We are grateful to be able to provide these tests at our clinic.

If you are not familiar with this type of testing, it is simply different methods of assessing organ systems to interpret their overall function. They can range from stool tests of the microbiome (probiotics) to urine tests for hormone metabolites. Today we are covering a brand new cardiovascular assessment (developed over the last 20 years) that can better predict the risk of a cardiovascular event (heart attack, stroke, etc) than other methods.

If cardiovascular disease is in your family or you are worried about your cholesterol and triglycerides in general, this test is for you.

If you have questions about this test or others we offer here at Finlandia please contact us: 604-734-7760.

Here are the details about this assessment (adapted from Lifelabs):

What does the PULS Test assess?
The PULS (Protein Unstable Lesion Signature) Test measures the most clinically-significant protein biomarkers that measure the body’s immune system response to arterial injury. When the arteries are injured, these proteins elevate. This test allows us to see how severe the injuries are.

These injuries lead to the formation and progression of lesions within the cardiovascular system. Some of them could then become unstable and rupture. When this happens, a dangerous cardiovascular event occurs.

Is PULS right for me?

We are open to running the PULS Test for anyone interested in assessing their cardiovascular risk, however, it is recommended for patients 40 years or older who have had no previous history of a heart attack (myocardial infarction).

Why do the PULS Test?

Early detection of unstable cardiac lesions and likelihood of rupture allows for critical intervention and prevention strategies. This gives us the opportunity to practice the holistic approach to a lifelong healthy heart.

Simply assessing cholesterol often is not enough to predict the risk of a heart attack – this test gives us an extra tool as many people do not experience signs or symptoms before an event happens. In prevention, this tool is essential.

What kind of results will I get?

Your PULS test results will include:

  • Your personalized 5-Year Cardiac Profile with individual measurements for each of the proteins that contribute to your cumulative 5-year unstable cardiac lesion diagnosis and the likelihood of rupture (Heart Attack).
  • Your “Heart Age” which shows your Cardiac Score relative to your age and gender group.
  • Recommended lifestyle modifications that may help maintain or reduce your chances of a heart attack.
  • PULS Test results will allow your physician to then determine the most appropriate course of action based on current clinical guidelines.

The PULS Test is done at Lifelabs in British Columbia with a requisition from one of our Naturopathic Doctors. If you have further questions about this assessment or others, please contact us at 604-734-7760.
